Celebrating Women in STEM

The EUMentorSTEM project is coming to an end this month and we are proud to look back on the multiplier event we organised earlier this year to celebrate women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). On 13th May 2019 Inova organised an informative and engaging event to present our work and activities to people who were interested in the topic of women in STEM.

During the event our aim was to create a space for people to discuss their ideas and knowledge concerning women in STEM. We welcomed a diverse group of participants; those who had a background in a STEM role, those attempting to start a career in STEM, those studying a STEM related subject and those who were interested in the topic. The event featured inspiring speakers:

  • Tehnuka Ilanko, Volcanologist and Commonwealth Rutherford Fellow from the University of Sheffield.
  • Dr Pat Morton, Chair of Trustees for WEST (Women in Engineering, Science and Technology).
  • Emma Marshall, Operations Director 3Squared Ltd.
  • Marina Larios, President of WiTEC (The European Association for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Director of Inova and Project Manager of the EUMentorSTEM project at Inova.

The topics included diversity, success and leadership for women in STEM. Some retold their own personal experiences, such as their journey as a migrant woman with a STEM background, others spoke about the importance of a more inclusive working environment, and the experiences of women in technology.  The outcomes of research conducted by the EUMentorSTEM consortium and the pilot training programmes organised by Inova in the UK were also presented.  Following the presentations, an array of opportunities were opened to participants, such as the chance to network with each other and share knowledge as part of a world café.  Overall, it was an empowering and positive experience for all!

Our participants felt inspired:

“Very positive, informative and uplifting.”

“I loved. I feel that there are more women in the same situation.”

“Inspiring because I met strong women.”

“I enjoyed all the presentations, I felt identified with all of them, they were really inspiring.”
